How To Get A Handicap Sticker In Oklahoma

Are you a driver in Oklahoma who has found yourself in a position where you need to get a disability parking permit? Are you wondering “how much do handicap stickers cost?” or even how to get a handicap sticker at all?

You may be surprised to know that the term “handicap sticker” is actually outdated. This might make it harder for some people with disabilities to find the information that they need.

Instead, the proper term is “disability parking permit” or “disability parking placard.”

With that in mind, we’re here to guide you through the process of getting one of these disability parking placards. Keep reading to learn all about how you qualify for a disabled parking placard and how to get one if you do.

Who Qualifies For A Disability Parking Permit?

Not everyone with a disability qualifies for a disabled parking placard. Your disability needs to make it difficult for you to travel a substantial distance on foot, making it necessary that you can park close to your destination.

If you’re not the driver of the car, you can generally still use the placard as a passenger as long as the driver is using the placard for your benefit alone (meaning that they remove it or don’t use its benefits when they’re driving for their own purposes).

Qualifying disabilities include:

  • Chronic inflammatory disease
  • Many chronic pain conditions at an appropriate severity
  • Legal blindness
  • Any condition requiring an oxygen tank
  • Chronic lung disease or respiratory conditions
  • Class III or Class IV heart diseases
  • Neurological diseases
  • Any condition requiring a mobility aid like a wheelchair, cane, walker, set of crutches, or prosthetic limb
  • Anything else that makes it difficult to walk 200 feet without taking a break to rest

These conditions don’t have to be permanent. You are able to get a temporary parking permit that lasts for the duration of your disability or mobility impairment.

If you’re unsure, don’t be afraid to ask if your disability qualifies you for a disabled parking placard.

What Does A Disability Parking Placard Allow Me To Do?

Disability parking placards are intended to make the lives of people with mobility limitations easier.

When you have a disability parking placard, you’re allowed to park anywhere that’s designated as a disabled parking spot. These spots are marked with the standard universal symbol for accessibility. You often see these spots closest to the destination in question.

These spots often have enough free space on either side to allow someone using an oxygen tank or mobility device to have ample room to exit the vehicle.

If you have a disability parking placard, you’re also able to park in metered parking spaces for free in many jurisdictions. This is to help people park close enough to their destinations in areas where there’s no private parking.

While many people try to take advantage of these spaces, without a disabled parking placard, they’ll be fined.

How Do I Get A Disability Parking Permit In Oklahoma?

Once you know that you qualify for a disability parking permit, you need to get a recommendation from a medical professional to support your application.

Many types of healthcare professionals qualify for this purpose. You can use your general practitioner, your chiropractor, your optometrist, your podiatrist, a nurse practitioner, or even a physician’s assistant (among others).

If you’re unsure whether or not someone is qualified to vouch for you and your disability, ask. Most doctors know whether or not they’re able to do this and may direct you to a more appropriate option.

When you find the right medical professional, they have to fill in section two of the official application form for your placard. You fill in and sign the first section and submit it to the department of public safety.

To submit it, mail it to:

Department of Public Safety

Driver Compliance Division – Disability Parking Permits

P.O. Box 11415

Oklahoma City, OK 73136

How To Get A Disabled Parking License Plate

You also have the option of getting a disabled parking plate. These are good for people who always use the same vehicle and have no need to move the placard from place to place.

After you’ve received your placard, you need to fill in another document to receive the plate. Send this document to:

Oklahoma Tax Commission,

Motor Vehicle Division,

Special Plate Section,

2501 Lincoln Boulevard

Oklahoma City, OK 73194-0013

You can choose a single one, one for both the front and back, or one for a motorcycle.

DISABILITY PARKING PLACARDS: Frequently Asked Questions

There are several common questions associated with getting a disability parking placard. To make sure that you have all of the information that you need before you start the process, we’ve included two of the most popular ones.

Do I Need To Pay?

There is no fee for your standard disability parking placard regardless of whether it’s temporary or permanent. If you knowingly request one that you don’t need, you will be fined $500.

If you want a license plate, you will have to pay a fee. A single plate or a motorcycle plate will cost $5.00, and renewal costs $1.55. Duplicate plates cost $15.00 and renewal costs $11.55.

Please note that the fees are lower if you are a disabled veteran. If you pick up your plate, it will cost $6.50. if you have it mailed, it will be $11.50.

How Long Do Disability Parking Permits Last?

The duration of your disability parking permit depends on why you’re using it. If you have a temporary condition, you can get a permit that lasts for 6 months. If your disability continues after the 6 months, you can renew the permit.

A non-temporary placard lasts for 5 years before you need to renew it.
